I think part of a high risk pregnancy is that you rarely ever look beyond the stage that you are currently at. For example, (fingers crossed) I will be huge at some point in the future. I don't think about that. That is a problem for another day and it is enough just to focus on today. So here is what I've learned so far:
1. Pregnancy is painful. We all know that labour and delivery is painful...we've all seen the movies and for some unlucky souls, the home videos. What nobody ever told me though was that almost every single day was going to involve at least a little bit of pain. As your body grows, obviously room needs to be made for baby. Major organs get shifted around, ligaments stretch, it's always something! Don't get me wrong, I actually welcome the pain. When I first figured out what it was I thought to myself: "My body is growing...with a baby!?! Bring it on!"
2. Not all people who stare at your baby bump will like what they see. This is probably my favourite one. I do enjoy watching people's reactions. Women my age usually smile knowingly at me. Old ladies - all too often - look at my stomach then at my ring finger. This almost always earns them a smug look from me. The best though are the single girls in their early twenties. These girls crack me up! The absolute horror on their faces is almost comical at times. To them, I'm the cautionary tale. It's almost as if I can read their thoughts: "Oh shit, I forgot to take my birth control pill today. Better take that as soon as I get home or that'll be me!" I've always thought that sex education in our classrooms isn't doing enough to deter teen sex. Let those young and impressionable girls into a delivery room. I bet they wouldn't have sex for years!
3. Your baby may be able to hear you, but they don't actually listen to you. Apparently telling the baby to kindly move away from my bladder at 4am so I don't have to get up and go pee doesn't work. Neither does telling the baby that we're not actually craving chocolate and perhaps some fresh raspberries would be a much better alternative.
That's it for now but as I continue I'll be sure to post more of these revelations!
